(94 – 96+) : The luxury cuvee of inky/ruby/purple colored-2003 Boisrenard is made in a stunning, somewhat modern style, but it possesses a classically southern nose of melted licorice, cassis, black cherry liqueur, smoke, with chocolate, and background oak. It leans toward being internationally styled, but pulls back with a reassuring blast of popper, Provencal herbs, black cherries, and currants in a full-bodied, powerful, intense style that is super pure and long/persistent. This 2003 need to resolve some tannin, but should be at its peak in 2-4 years, and last for 15 or more.

***** The recipe for success: very old vines, 60-100 years of age. Eighteen months in barrels. Then bottled without fining or filtration. A splendid Châteauneuf du Pape from 100-year-old Grenache vines.

Tasting at 12 top domaines provide a preview of an exciting year
There’s also a luxury cuvée, called Boisrenard, selected from the estate’s oldest vines, which range from 70 to 100 years old. The wine is aged for 18 months in roughly 20% new oak. The 2003 is racy and dark, packed with licorice, blueberry and black-berry fruit buttressed by powerful tannins and riveting acidity. It shows Port-like power with Burgundian nuance.

2005 wine guide
Garnet-red in colour, and practically opaque. Cherry and kirsch flavours; dense, generous, deep mouthfeel; not yet the finished article, but ample and balanced. (16/20)
Bettane & Desseauve
Beaurenard for both cuvées, white and red
***** Garnet-red in colour, and practically opaque. Expressive bouquet of black cherries and kirsch. Dense, generous, deep mouthfeel. Not yet fully integrated, but impressive fullness and balance. Good length, and this too is definitely a wine for laying down. 16/20.

Insider Vol. 1 December 14, 2005
97 points. Loaded with rich, dark layers of black currant, blackberry, truffle, tar, mocha and bittersweet cocoa, this pumps out both fruit and terroir on the grip-filled finish. Immense in scale and depth, this is hard to lay off now, but should be even more impressive when it drops its muscle to show more elegance (that will take a while though). Best from 2008 through 2030.
